Backlinks are votes to your website. Basically a site with 100 votes is going to do better than a website with 0 votes. Every company is trying to improve their ownwebsite and they maybe having an SEO campaign. On page optimisation is extremely important in respect of SEO but if everyone carried out SEO at a good level how could Google decide in its calculation which site is best to be in the top spot.

Backlinks relating to a new site will be normally none. As I site grows and becomes popular natural backlinks are created by people linking to the site for information, etc. So a site naturally grows. A new paper article with reference to your site would carry a good weight in the points score of backlinks and this leads on to the question of how many backlinks you need.

10 high quality backlinks will give more points for the calculations within Google than 100 random. High quality backlinks are links that are on websites with a high page rank and on sites that are relevant to the topic of your site. So you dont need thousands of links, it is a matter of quality links on relevant sites.
